Themed pen done right? | Pelikan M800 Golf (1996)

Themed fountain pens have always been a go-to gimmick for pens to start branching out and create more products that touch their customers interests a bit more - from the colorful and playful Pokemon or branded collabs to the more luxurious marketing campaigns, the pen world has seen it all. Today we are going to look at a more toned down themed fountain pen from Pelikan - the Golf releases from 1996.

The piece we have here today is in unused condition so there would not be a writing sample today unfortunately. Still we can appreciate all of the things Pelikan has put in this special release. It came to me in a rather small package and a not so “wow” box. There are papers and pamphlet to go with the pen but what we all want to see is the main character - the M800 in question.

The box has a medallion with the limited edition number 4000/4500 pieces - quite a neat number to come across. and the fountain pen itself is held in place with 2 “golf tees” like suspenders to go with the golf theme. Not too much, but on point in my opinion.

The two golf clubs and a ball is inlaid on the dark green barrel, creates a sort of majestic look to it. It’s not overly done similar to the Toledo M900 but I do appreciate the gold details. The whole pen is in a dark green resin and the gold + green combo does remind me of a certain Swiss watch brand that everyone knows and the golf thing also goes hand in hand with this luxury combo I think. Not that I have tried the sport before but I do like that this is a rather tastefully done design.

Overall, this is a rather different M800 to what we usually see from Pelikan, a solid color with extra details added, the amount 4500 pieces worldwide seemed to be numerous at first but it is pretty hard to see them online from reputable vendors.
